Description:
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Laboratory Intern to assist our research team with daily operations in the laboratory. This internship offers a valuable hands-on experience for an individual interested in pursuing a career in scientific research. The intern will gain experience in various laboratory techniques, safety protocols, and data management processes, while contributing to the efficient functioning of the laboratory.
The internship will be based at AHRI-Durban, in the laboratory of Henrik Kløverpris funded on a grant from the National Institute of Health, US (NIH) and will be for 12 months, with the opportunity for extension and/or transition into relevant career path.
Overview of Duties:
This internship offers great opportunity to study a novel area of HIV infection through unique human tissue samples in state-of-the-art research facilities with access to new technologies through international collaborations. Our lab’s research is centered around immune responses to HIV infection with a particular focus on immune subsets located within human tissue. This work aims to better understand the immune responses located in human tissue that are directly related to disease pathology. This work is based on access to human tissue through clinical research sites in and around Durban.
Brief overview of internship:
Assist in BSL2 processing of primary human samples (blood and tissue).
Assist in running laboratory assays including support on Histology, multiparameter flow cytometry and RNA sequencing protocols (population and single cell assays).
Maintain good laboratory practice.
Responsible for maintaining and organizing some laboratory materials, including many different types of molecular reagents.
Assist post-doc and technicians in setting up and prepping for longer experimental setups.
Minimum Qualifications:
BSc/Hons degree in Biology or related life/health science discipline
Minimum Experience:
Experience with common lab procedures such as pipetting, weighing, preparing solutions.
Experience with basic laboratory equipment such centrifuges, microscopes, nanodrop.
Completion of lab courses that provide hands-on-experience.
Basic experience with recording and analysing data, either through coursework or previous internship.
Understanding of standard lab safety practices, such as the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and proper waste disposal.
Skills Required:
Good verbal and written communication skills in English
Accuracy and precision
High computer literacy; proficient in using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Must be able to work under pressure, independently or in a team
Experience with any lab-specific software or data analysis tools is advantageous.
