Introductory paragraph
The University of Cape Town HIV Diversity and Pathogenesis Group is looking for a motivated, suitably
qualified person, for the position of BIOINFORMATICIAN / RESEARCH OFFICER, for a 2-year T1 academic
contract position. This is an opportunity to be part of an exciting pan-African HIV research consortium to
evaluating HIV diversity and evolution to aid in the development of HIV vaccines.
Requirements for the job:
• PhD in bioinformatics, or related field with at least 6 years post-PhD experience
• Advanced knowledge of Python, R or relevant programming language
• Advanced skills in the analysis of HIV sequences, including phylogenetics
• Evidence research outputs
• Management and leadership skills
• Good communication skills
• Ability to work well in a team
The following will be advantageous:
• Experience with workflows for next generation sequencing of viral templates
• Previous supervision of Postgraduate students or Postdoctoral fellows
• An understanding of immunology
Responsibilities:
• Play a leadership role in driving the research agenda in the group
• Deliver on research objectives
• Co-ordinate and lead relevant groups or committees within the BRILLIANT consortium
• Assist with line management of bioinformatics staff members
• Supervision of post-doctoral fellows or students
• Administrative duties
• Assistance with grant writing and project reporting
• Generate research outputs and present research findings
• Social Responsibility
The annual cost of employment, including benefits (where applicable), is R673 775,00 to R901 517,00.
